Happy Labor Day!

Now, more than ever, seems to be the perfect time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of the American Worker. 2020 has been a tumultuous year, but it has also provided the opportunity to show our collective resolve and adaptability to forge ahead.

All of our U.S. offices are closed this Labor Day in honor of those that have played a pivotal role in building our nation’s infrastructure. Our company’s innovative work reached the 80-year milestone in 2020, and we’re prouder than ever to support the communities in which we live and work.

Hot Off the Track!

Michael Baker is pleased to announce our successful campaign to once again attain NCAT (National Center for Asphalt Technologies) Certification for our pavement collection system. Fresh off the hot test track in Opelika, AL, our pavement collection experts cruised through the 10-lap driving test and passed with flying colors.

The Demarcation Between North & South

As we wrap up celebrations for National Surveyors Week it seems like the perfect opportunity to shine a light on possibly the most famous border in America - the Mason-Dixon Line. Having grown up in Maryland and a short 0.25-miles from Pennsylvania, the Mason-Dixon Line holds a soft-spot in my heart as my first geographic “discovery”, and likely the catalyst that guided me into the geospatial sciences.

At the ripe age of 5 my best friend and I were wandering through the woods on our own exploratory mission (yes, you could do that without parental supervision in my day), when we stumbled upon a headstone atop a small ridgeline. Excited that we had found the grave of some unknown person with just the initials M and P, we hurried home, grabbed my dad, and brought him to our discovery…what I now know as Milestone #156.

The memories came rushing back as I read a recent article about the upcoming decennial survey of the 196-mile border stretching from Delaware to the point where Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia meet, and reflected on how this invisible boundary has shaped the very fabric of our country.

Thank you, to all the surveyors (past and present) that have made a difference in my life.

National Surveyors Week 2020

Happy National Surveyors Week!
From the parcel of land you call home, to the boundary of the State in which you reside, Surveyors have shaped our landscape and played a vital role in countless, unseen aspects of your daily life. So join us and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (www.nsps.us.com/) this week to celebrate these professionals and their contributions to this great country.

WVU Geospatial Career Day

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit with the next generation of Geospatial Professionals from West Virginia University (WVU). Hosted by our very own Andy Hughes (LiDAR Processing Supervisor), with support from the LiDAR Team’s Hunter White (LiDAR Fleet Manager) and Amanda Swope (LiDAR Analyst), the annual event was again held at our Moon Township, PA office.

The next budding crop of professionals got the opportunity to see real world applications of geospatial technologies, tour our latest Mobile LiDAR and Pavement collection vehicles, and leverage the office’s newly-remolded Training Center for a video conference discussion with our current troop of geospatial interns and our National Geospatial Lead from Michael Baker’s Jackson, MS office.

Always a pleasure to interact with the next batch of talent preparing to hit the streets.
